Compact continuum source finding for next generation radio surveys

چکیده
We present a detailed analysis of four of the most widely used radio source-finding packages in radio astronomy, and a program being developed for the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder telescope. The four packages: SEXTRACTOR, SFIND, IMSAD and SELAVY are shown to produce source catalogues with high completeness and reliability. In this paper we analyse the small fraction (∼1 per cent) of cases in which these packages do not perform well. This small fraction of sources will be of concern for the next generation of radio surveys which will produce many thousands of sources on a daily basis, in particular for blind radio transients surveys. From our analysis we identify the ways in which the underlying sourcefinding algorithms fail. We demonstrate a new source-finding algorithm AEGEAN, based on the application of a Laplacian kernel, which can avoid these problems and can produce complete and reliable source catalogues for the next generation of radio surveys.

Source Finding and Visualisation
Source Finding and Visualisation Bärbel S. Koribalski Large radio surveys, such as those proposed for the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP), require excellent source-finding algorithms. Here, we discuss advanced methods for finding sources in spectral line, radio continuum and polarisation surveys. We also look into data visualisation to explore the survey results together with their multi-wave...
متن کاملCosmological Studies from Radio Source Samples
I review some recent cosmological studies based on redshift surveys of radio sources selected at low frequencies. The accretion rate onto the central black hole is identified as the basis of a crude physical division of the low-frequency population into two sub-populations: the first comprises ‘Eddington-tuned’ (high accretion rate) quasars and their torus-hidden counterparts; the second compri...
متن کاملUsing radio emission to detect isolated and quiescent accreting black holes
We discuss the implications of new relations between black holes’ masses, Xray luminosities and radio luminosities, as well as the properties of the next generation of radio telescopes, for the goal of finding isolated accreting black holes. Because accreting black holes have radio-to-X-ray flux ratios that increase with decreasing luminosity in Eddington units, and because deep surveys over la...
متن کاملAn infrared–radio simulation of the extragalactic sky: from the Square Kilometer Array to Herschel
To exploit synergies between the Herschel Space Observatory and next generation radio facilities, we have extended the semi-empirical extragalactic radio continuum simulation of Wilman et al. to the midand far-infrared. Here we describe the assignment of infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to the star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei, using Spitzer 24, 70 and 160μm and SCUB...
متن کاملNew Catalogs of Compact Radio Sources in the Galactic Plane
Archival data have been combined with recent observations of the Galactic Plane using the Very Large Array to create new catalogs of compact centimetric radio sources. The 20 cm source catalog covers a longitude range of −20 < l < 120; the latitude coverage varies from ±0. 8 to ±2. 7. The total survey area is ∼ 330 deg; coverage is 90% complete at a flux density threshold of ∼ 13 mJy, and over ...
